Work Wise: Numbers Game - Class size

The average size of S1 maths and English classes in 2003 compared with 2007.

The average size of first year maths and English classes in Scottish secondary schools has decreased by almost 30 per cent since 2003, exceeding Scottish Government targets.

Average sizes for both core subjects has reduced from 26 to just over 18 pupils in four years.

The decrease in primary school class sizes has been far less dramatic. Across primary years one to seven, the maximum average reduction in class size was only one pupil per class.

Education secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "Early intervention, such as cutting class sizes, is the hallmark of our government's education policies.

"We believe that providing help and support at this vital early stage can make a real difference to a child's lifelong prospects."
