Figures released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families show that, for the first time, there are more Asian children than black children in this category.
On 31 March 2007, Asian children made up 29 per cent of the group while black children accounted for 34 per cent. But the figures for 31 March 2008 report a rise in the proportion of Asian children, who now account for 36 per cent of unaccompanied asylum seeker children in care. The figures continue the trend of rising numbers of Asian children seeking asylum since 2004. The number of unaccompanied asylum seeker children in care has remained fairly static at around 3,450 since 2005.
