- Why did they win? Whitley Bay High scooped the award in recognition of the professional development and training undertaken in its teaching observation gallery. The gallery, which sits between two classrooms, has mirrored walls that allow teachers and trainees to watch lessons without interrupting them.
- How is it used? Teachers from schools across the region use it to improve teaching and learning practice. Teachers from challenging schools have been able to observe lessons then work in groups on issues such as behaviour management.
- How else is it used? Trainees at Newcastle University use the gallery to observe second and third year teachers in real settings. Recently, aspiring leaders from schools across the region watched a mock interview from the gallery and then discussed how to prepare for the next stages in their careers.
