Welsh scheme fails struggling pupils

Education
A Welsh Assembly Government bid to boost the attainment of disadvantaged pupils has failed to improve exam results, according to education watchdog Estyn.

The Raise Attainment and Individual Standards in Education (Raise) scheme, which has paid out almost £30m to schools since 2006, has not improved results at key stages one to three, nor has it increased the number of disadvantaged pupils gaining five GCSEs grades A* to C.

The report said many schools are failing to focus funding on tackling socio-economic disadvantage, instead using the cash to help learners with low educational attainment. Disadvantaged girls who make good progress at school were particularly let down by the service.
