Welsh curriculum stage put on hold

The Welsh Assembly Government has delayed its flagship education policy by a year because of funding concerns.

The Foundation Stage curriculum for three- to seven-year-olds was due to be introduced across Wales during the next three years. It would see a staff to pupil ratio of 1:8 for three- to five-year-olds, and 1:15 for five- to seven-year-olds. However, critics argue the assembly government needs to significantly increase the £112m allocated to make these ratios a reality.

Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day Nurseries Association, said: "We believe delaying the requirements will present an opportunity for the Welsh Assembly Government to resolve some of the issues changing the ratio is creating."
