Pilot projects to address the childcare needs of ethnic minority families will form part of a far-reaching initiative to boost childcare in some of the most disadvantaged areas of Wales.

The Kids' Club Project, run by Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids' Clubs, willcreate more than 100 new childcare clubs and 200 new childcare jobs. Theinitiative was launched last month with 5.8m in funding.

This includes a grant of 3.7m from the European Union's Objective1 programme for deprived communities, together with cash from the BigLottery Fund and Welsh Assembly Government. Some of the funding will gotowards assisted childcare places for poor families, one-to-one supportfor children with special needs, and pilot projects.

The pilots will target the childcare needs of different minority groupsand childcare for 11- to 14-year-olds, explained Objective 1 projectmanager Patrice Metro. This reflects shortages identified in recentresearch and surveys of families in Wales, she added.

Clybiau Plant Cymru will also be publishing a series of resource packsfor out-of-school clubs on topics including working with minoritygroups.
