Vulnerable lose out as support for regional partnerships is axed

The government has cut off funding for the regional partnerships that support work with looked-after, special needs and disabled children in England.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has told the 10 partnerships that their funding will not be renewed once it ends in March 2008.

The voluntary partnerships are made up of local authorities and partner organisations and work to promote best practice regionally and nationally. They support the development and delivery of national policy and work with the nine government offices on regional priorities.

Claire Dorer, chief executive of The National Association of Independent Schools and Non-Maintained Special Schools (NASS) and a member of the regional partnerships national steering group, said the DCSF had written to them about the non-renewal of funding.
