Vox pop - Should smokers be banned from fostering children?

Redbridge Council in Essex says it will no longer place children with foster carers who smoke after January 2010. But concerns have been raised that a ban could reduce the number of homes available for vulnerable children.

As ever, we are trying to get from where we are now to where we want to be and it is about making this journey in a way that maximises the opportunities for children to be looked after well in the broadest sense. Therefore, a blanket ban may not be helpful at this point in time, but raising the possibility of such a ban helps to set the agenda in which social work assessment can address this as a real concern for the health of children.
