Vox pop - Should pupils be stopped from leaving school for lunch?

The School Food Trust has urged head teachers to introduce stay-on-site policies banning pupils from leaving the school grounds during lunch breaks to stop them buying junk food from shops and restaurants.

A stay-on-site policy is essential to the health and wellbeing of our pupils. The stay-on-site policy and compulsory school meals are written into the agreement with parents when they come to the school so parents have been very supportive.

Often students come to us in Year 7 unable to hold cutlery and some are not used to eating at a table, so the school is providing valuable social skills. Burgers and chips are not appropriate. Social skills are not learned stood outside the local takeaway shop, but in school, sat at a table enjoying a tasty, healthy meal with their peers.
