Marriage is a vital tool in repairing social breakdown. All the evidence shows us that children thrive best when they are brought up by both parents and that marriage is the glue that holds families together. Cohabiting parents are about five times more likely to split up than married parents.

The UK is almost unique among western economies in failing to support traditional families through the tax and welfare system, and has the highest rate of family break-up and lone parenthood in Europe.

If we want to improve children's prospects, we should use public policy to promote family stability and give more children the chance of a secure start in life.
