Vox Pop: Can a ratings website work for childcare providers?

2 mins read Early Years
The Good Care Guide allows parents to rate childcare providers based on their experiences

NO

Trisha Maynard, chair, TACTYC – the association for the professional development of early years educators

While fully supportive of initiatives that raise standards of education and care for young children, TACTYC is concerned about parents relying on a ratings website for selecting childcare.

There are many reasons why parents would be motivated to give a setting a "good" or "poor" rating. We would advise parents to read inspection reports and visit a number of settings, for example, to look at the facilities, find out about routines, listen to the interactions between adults and children and check on staff qualifications and experience.

Many parents are not in the position where they are able to make a choice between settings, but those who are, need to base their decision on as much evidence as possible.
