Voting age: Labour to persist with voting at 16

The Government plans to push ahead with a proposal to lower the voting age to 16 despite the fact that the move has been rejected by the Electoral Commission.

Ministers indicated last week that the proposals would be included in the Labour Party's manifesto for the next general election expected next spring.

The plan will also be debated at this autumn's Labour conference in Brighton.

Last month the commission argued the voting age should not be lowered, because most comparable Western countries had a minimum voting age of 18. It also claimed voter turnout would fall further.

However, it did recommend that the age at which people are allowed to stand for Parliament should be lowered from 21 to 18. This would be implemented in the same legislation that would see the voting age fall.
