Vocational Education: Greater emphasis will engage pupils

A greater emphasis on vocational skills will help to re-engage young people disillusioned with the education system, charity leaders have said as proposals to reform qualifications for 14- to 19-year-olds were revealed.

Joyce Moseley, chief executive of the young people's charity Rainer, said giving more value to vocational skills would encourage less academically motivated young people to aim higher and avoid falling out of the system early.

Mike Tomlinson, former chief inspector of schools, published his final report on 14-19 reform this week. It highlights the UK's low rate of participation in education and training for 17-year-olds.

"By engaging young people in the education system we provide them with the best escape from the pitfalls that may surround their lives," said Moseley.
