Violence against staff: Zero Tolerance

Public-sector workers often have to face aggressive clients. Karen Faux looks at what's being done to protect them.

Recently, an enraged father held hostage a social worker in Cheshire during a visit to a family whose child had been taken into foster care, and the worker didn't think he'd live to tell the tale. "It started off as a routine visit as part of a complex care proceeding, but turned into a terrible ordeal for the member of staff," reveals Andrew Webb, director of Stockport social services. "He was kept on the premises for a number of hours and was threatened with death.

"The man also threatened to kill the worker's family and said he knew of their whereabouts," adds Webb. "The situation was eventually resolved with force by the police."
