Taxpayers get back nearly £6 for every £1 invested in volunteering opportunities for young people, according to research by the charity V.
The organisation calculated the overall cost of each of the volunteering opportunities it offers is £109, and estimates that the social return on that investment is £635.
The return was calculated based on the role volunteering plays in helping young people find work, a place in further education or on a training course. Of the volunteers supported through a V scheme, 15 per cent found paid work after volunteering, 34 per cent went on to university and eight per cent took up a training place.
