Unison says Edinburgh staff cuts risk meltdown

Social Care
Plans to halve the number of frontline team leaders in a Scottish authority's children and families social work department could lead to "meltdown", a union has warned.

Public sector union Unison claims Edinburgh City Council has proposed cutting 50 per cent of the team leaders and has called an emergency meeting to discuss the situation.

"These frontline staff have held the service together for years, often despite the council, and certainly without the resources to do the job. Without them, the service could face meltdown," said Tom Connolly, Unison's Edinburgh branch service conditions officer.

Councillor Jenny Dawe, leader of Edinburgh City Council, said child protection remained the council's "top priority".

"We want to ensure the service meets its demands and is as effective as possible, but there is no intention of reducing frontline social work services," she said.
