Uniformed Youth: Tory MP calls for Scout recognition

In a parliamentary debate due to be held yesterday (15 May), David Amess, the joint chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Scout Group, was expected to call for more recognition of the contribution of Scouts by the Government.

"The Scouts give the opportunity to show young people in a positive light, in organised settings," he said. "The Government has been missing a trick with the Scouts in not linking them with schools."

He added that more should be done to tackle the shortage of volunteers. "I don't think people realise just how many Scouts there are in Britain and the wonderful things they do," he said. "The centenary celebrations are a good time to remind people of a wonderful organisation."
