Underage Sex: London told to change protocol

Pressure is mounting on the London Child Protection Committee to change its interim protocol for professionals working with sexually active young people.

The information commissioner has said that there are "areas of concern"in the protocol and that it will be contacting the committee to discussthem further.

It follows a complaint by Action on Rights for Children, which claimedthe guidelines breached the Data Protection Act 1998.

In July the Association of Chief Police Officers said confidentialityagreements between sexually active young people and health workersshould extend to other professionals (Children Now, 20-26 July).

But the information commissioner says the protocol is "too vague" aboutwhich professionals would make a decision to check with the MetropolitanPolice, which may lead to "unnecessary referrals".

Barry Quirk, chair of the London Child Protection Committee, said theprotocol was out for consultation.
