Underage drinking: Survey reveals rate of teen alcohol use

One in nine 13-year-olds gets drunk every week, according to a survey of 33,000 children carried out by the Schools Health Educational Unit (SHEU).

For 15-year-olds, the figure is considerably higher, with some 27 percent saying they got drunk once a week.

Alcopops are the favourite drinks of 13-year-olds. For 15-year-oldgirls, alcopops remain the favourite type of drink, followed by spiritsand fortified wine, such as Martini. But 15-year-old boys' first choiceis beer or lager followed by spirits.

David Regis, head of research at SHEU, said: "Most of the drinking goeson at home with some adult knowledge - parents say they are lettingtheir children learn their limits at home in a safe environment. Butthis doesn't follow through to young adult culture because 18- to30-year-olds are overdoing it."
