Family a major source of alcohol for underage drinkers, survey reveals

1 min read Health
Parents are allowing 15- and 17-year-olds to drink regularly at home, according to a survey by Drinkaware.

One in 10 said they drink at home two to three times a week and 17 per cent regularly drink alcohol at friends’ homes.

The survey of 600 teenagers reveals that six out of 10 of those who had drunk at home in the week prior to being surveyed had been given alcohol by their family.

Three-quarters of teenagers hate being drunk and two-thirds feel ashamed after drinking too much. Peer pressure accounted for drinking in a third of cases and two-thirds of those surveyed said their friends rarely drink.

Parents are seen by teenagers as the best source of information about alcohol. Just under half said they would go to their parents for advice, while fewer than one in 10 would turn to friends.
