Underage drinking: Charity dismisses alcohol crackdown

The crackdown, led by the Home Office, revealed that half of the off-licences targeted in the campaign's first two weeks had been selling alcohol to underage drinkers. However, Addaction believes the strategy will not solve the problem.

Rebecca Cheshire, policy and practice manager for young people at the charity, said: "If young people want to drink, they will find a way."

She said the education of young people and their parents was a more effective way to combat underage drinking.

The British Crime Survey's annual report, published last week, found that half of all violent crimes involved alcohol.
