UK holds Child Obesity Week

The UK's first National Child Obesity Week will take place next month to urge the coalition government to do more to combat child obesity levels.

The week of campaigning and lobbying will start on 5 July and has beenorganised by the National Obesity Forum (NOF) and Mend, which providesafter-school healthy lifestyle programmes for children.

It will urge the government to set out a clear plan of action and newtargets regarding childhood obesity. Mend will also stage physicalactivity events in the 350 areas where it runs its afterschoolprogrammes.

NOF board member Tam Fry said: "The week must act as a prompt for thenew coalition government to take urgent action to tackle the childobesity crisis and reverse existing trends that are severely damagingthe health of our nation's children."
