'Troublesome' teenagers may also be troubled

Multiple adversities in childhood affect a young person's resilience and ability to cope as they move into adolescence and adulthood. At their most extreme, they can result in suicide and accidental death. As young people emerge from childhood, we have to remember they need support to deal with life's challenges.

It affects not only the immediate family and peer circle, but also our wider communities and society as we struggle to reconcile ourselves with the loss of such a young life. It also challenges us to reflect on our failure to meet their needs.

Sadly, Northern Ireland continues to experience higher rates of suicide among adolescents and young adults than other parts of the UK.
