Time for UN convention to be signed into UK law

Northern Ireland children's commissioner says children's rights need to be written into law.

On 1 October 2003, Northern Ireland took its first formal steps towards realising the fulfilment of children and young people's rights when the first Commissioner for Children and Young People took up post. In that time, I have witnessed the work of many others that has added to the voices of those calling for the full implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Today we are beginning to see real change in attitudes to the convention - but it is time for politicians here in Northern Ireland, as well as in other parts of the UK and Europe, to seize the initiative and adopt the convention into legislation.
