The education maintenance allowance will be extended to young people on Entry to Employment programmes. From April next year, these 65,000 young people will receive the allowance, which enables 16- to 19-year-olds to learn by providing up to 30 a week. It will also be paid on Programme Led Pathways - vocational learning programmes leading to Apprenticeships.
Currently, it is only available to those in schools and colleges.
The allowance is paid to young people on top of other benefits. It will replace the 40 minimum training allowance for 16- to 19-year-olds in work-based learning, which is offset against other benefits.
