Highlighting the positive impact play has on children's health, Stop, look and listen: children talk about traffic says such outcomes rely on children being able to travel and play safely in an area where levels of pollution and traffic noise are low.
The organisations surveyed 154 children aged from seven to 14. One said: "I can't get to my friend's house because there is too much traffic."
The research showed children had deep-seated and genuine fears about traffic. "They feel unsafe when playing or walking outside, and both their health and their independence are suffering as a result," says the report.
The children surveyed were "acutely aware that unsafe roads could place them at risk of serious injury and death," it adds.
