Letters: Housing that promotes play

1 min read
I was delighted to see Children Now publish the Play Charter. As the Charter's final point made clear, "play is everyone's responsibility" and "the ability for children to play freely outside is a sign of a healthy, vibrant community".

Both as a father and a play consultant I am fortunate to be part of just such a community in Gloucestershire. Our group of 31 households has co-designed and co-funded England's first new-build co-housing development in Stroud.

We each have our own private house while sharing common land and a communal central building. This is not in rolling fields but on a tight brownfield site in a dense residential area. With vehicles all parked at the entrance there are no roads to create a traffic danger. And with interested adults on hand but not directing activities, our children are enjoying the twin benefits of freedom and safety identified in the Charter. They are playing outside so much more than in any place we have lived previously.
