THE NATIONAL YOUTH AGENCY: Resourcing Excellent Youth Services -How Getting Connected can help

1 min read
The 'Transforming Youth Work - Resourcing Excellent Youth Services' agenda poses challenges for youth services on the standards and level of provision the Government expects all local authority youth services in England to achieve by 2005. Stephen Foster, programme manager for Getting Connected, explains how the curriculum framework and staff development programme can help youth workers and leaders meet these challenges.

Getting Connected is a curriculum framework developed by the Young Adult Learners Partnership (YALP), a joint initiative between The NYA and the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE). It comprises nine units, each consisting of a number of learning outcomes. Through undertaking activities associated with these, young people are encouraged to explore their values and beliefs, and enhance their knowledge, understanding, and their personal and social skills:

- a commitment to enhancement of self-esteem; - support for young people in the acquisition of key life skills; - support for young people in understanding and handling their emotions; - optional accreditation through the Oxford, Cambridge and RSA (OCR) Examinations Board; - sufficient flexibility to allow for the use of the framework to underpin existing curriculums, activities and projects; and - a comprehensive staff development programme.

The table below shows how the Getting Connected programme can address some of the specific requirements of Resourcing Youth Services.

The primary purpose of Getting Connected is to support young people, particularly those disengaged from employ- ment, education or training, in their growth towards independence and adulthood. At the same time, in using the framework, youth services would be addressing a number of standards and targets outlined in Resourcing Excellent Youth Services - and at a cost which compares favourably with other programmes. For these reasons the framework is worthy of serious consideration.
