The National Youth Agency: Enjoyable and creative ways of engaging young people

One of the (many) perks of my job is that you get to see all manner of good schemes, plans, projects and programmes for young people pass under your nose, and are constantly reminded of what a creative and inspirational workforce we have out there. And of course what a creative and inspirational lot of young people we have too (so sign up for Shine Week now, the lot of you - see www.shineweek.co.uk).

There are too many to mention here of course, but now and again it's good to remind yourself and highlight one or two, just as a small way of redressing the still largely unflattering portrait of young people that we try to counter, but also to inspire and encourage some of those workers toiling in splendid isolation who may not be aware of some of this practice.

For example, this week I was rather taken with the way fishing is emerging as an excellent way of engaging with young people. New research shows that angling projects across the country are using the buzz of catching a fish and the one-to-one engagement opportunities of sitting by a peaceful waterway to successfully get disaffected young people back on track.
