Granted, there is undoubtedly a contingent of rioters who are relishing the chaos. The causes, however, are deep rooted.

For 30 years, young people from ethnic minorities have effectively been shunned by employers, and racial discrimination - despite being banned in France - is rife. "Doors are closed when you're an Arab," says writer Yazid Sabeg. "After several times, you go home carrying a bag of hatred on your shoulders." Despondency can turn to paranoia, and paranoia boils over when there's a trigger event - such as the death of two young men of African origin who were allegedly being pursued by police.
