The National Youth Agency: Comment - The home of values

1 min read
One of the brilliant aspects of the strategy being created for the 2012 Olympics is the fundamental commitment to developing and expressing those values to which we also aspire in youth work - respect, equality and listening to the voice and thoughts of young people.

Values are our stock in trade. They overlap and build on each other. At their heart are the values which underpin our direct work with young people. Mutual respect; voluntary engagement; appreciating the contribution that young people make to each other and to communities; social justice; valuing young people for who they are now as well as who they will become. These values bind the practice of youth work, regardless of our role and place.

Take away the commitment to these values in our work with the young and what is left is simply not good youth work. In this respect we can meet the Olympic challenge - we live and practise these values already. For readers who want to go further, I point you to the writing of Bernard Davies and Sarah Banks.
