The National Youth Agency: Comment - School or not to school

Lifelong learning for all was the goal the last time we seriously tried community education. It was a good vision. Actually, it is a good vision, but we have different ideas now as to how we will achieve this end. This is inevitable; it is always easier to agree on our ultimate direction.

The collective enterprise had a significant number of achievements, as well as wrangles along the way. We argued the philosophy underpinning our work fiercely. There came a time, however, when I banned further debate on the true meaning of comprehensive community education. It had become like that famous medieval problem - how many angels can you balance on a pinhead? We got onto the process of restructuring and reshaping instead. A focus on engagement, outcomes, efficiency, effectiveness and so on is essential.
