And then, on the other hand, the lottery also conjures up an image of corporate greed. An endless struggle to generate greater profits for the few by bleeding the many. With the by-product that many of us who started out having a harmless flutter once a week are starting to feel that we're in danger of becoming hardened gamblers.
When the National Lottery started, we in our office, like thousands of others up and down the country, picked our numbers, put our pound in and subscribed to a slice of a dream. It was a bit of fun. We could afford it. Perhaps we'd win but if not, hey, it's still achieving something positive.
