First News (strapline, For Young Minds) will appear every Friday, price 1 with a 5p donation going to children's charities. Aimed at nine- to 12-year-olds, it will run serious news stories alongside the usual diet of showbiz, games and sport. It will also adopt a campaigning stance, particularly on children's issues.
What's not clear from what I've seen, though, is how much, if any, of the writing and layout work will be done by young people themselves - something we at The NYA would advocate (quick plug for our own magazine Ruckus, produced with young people, Issue 2 of which is now available for download from our web site). Because, after all, much of the value of a product like this is not just in reading it to extend your knowledge and understanding but being part of the process of putting it all together. The success of many youth magazines around the country is testament to this. And to help develop this area The NYA hopes later this year to produce a "how to" pack to encourage and enable more groups to give it a go (again, working directly with young people).
