The National Youth Agency: Comment - Fertile ground for policy

1 min read
Spring is coming. Snowdrops are out; daffodils are pushing up their green shoots. But the ground is still hard and latent - waiting to demonstrate its full potential.

The field of youth work is similar. It holds a deep seam of knowledge and experience of young people and what helps them to take effective charge of their lives. Youth work knowledge is too important to leave in the ground: we need to dig it out and make sure it is used by policy makers to create a better environment for youth work and young people.

At a national level we have been doing just that. With partners I have been working with civil servants on the 14-19 agenda. It is important to get right this opportunity to extend learning for all young people up to age 18, particularly for those who don't flourish within the current system. Recognition of the contribution of the non-formal sector is very welcome.
