The report is the culmination of a two-year research programme that aimed to analyse the informal and unstructured processes of youth work practice, as well as its more easily defined features, in order to gain a comprehensive picture of the work. It is hoped that this will inform the approach of youth work practitioners to methods of accountability and evaluation.
Lead researcher Jean Spence said: "This research has been undertaken during a period in which the tension between policy and key youth principles is beginning to impact upon the practice environment, forcing youth workers to adjust priorities and to question the extent to which their practice is understood or socially valued.
