Today's policy landscape offers many positive features for youth services. These include the renewed policy drive, backed by cash, by central government, and the potential for youth work to play a larger role in local public services for the young - in settings as diverse as libraries and health as well as in more conventional leisure-time activities.
The new duty on local authorities underlines their role as the body that can best help to identify young people's needs and, in partnership, provide and commission the most effective ways of meeting them. The Government's 10-year strategy points the way forward and has many beneficial features. Now it must be implemented, locally and nationally.
