Primary schoolchildren helped clean the streets of Holloway, north London, last week in a bid to set an example to adults. The nine-year-olds from Grafton Primary School joined Islington Council's A1 Clean Team to clear the streets of sweet wrappers, chewing gum and takeaway food cartons. After an hour of collecting rubbish the children built a litter sculpture that went on display in the street to show people just how much they are throwing on the streets. Nitsa Sergides, headteacher of Grafton Primary School, said: "Not only is it depressing when we walk out onto the streets to see the rubbish that people have thrown down, but the autumn winds blow it into our playground. The children want their living space to reflect how they feel about their area."
