Demands on 21st century social workers are clearly enormous. Pictures of perfect storms come to mind.
Families' needs are intensifying as public sector cuts bite, we have fewer resources and Ofsted's expectations have grown rapidly. We must beware, however, of a counsel of despair, as this will not ease the burden of thousands of practitioners around the country working to deliver services to children and families. There is a balance to strike between holding onto a critical perspective about "on the ground" realities and the need to respond to these unprecedented challenges with confidence, capability and pride. This makes it all the more vital for social work to be strong, vibrant and innovative.
