Joker Idris, 18, from Sudan, was found dead in his cell by staff at HMP Chelmsford, Essex. Paramedics tried to revive Idris but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. He had been serving a sentence for possession of an offensive weapon.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said: "Joker Idris was found hanging in his cell at 7.15am on Christmas Day. Staff and paramedics attended but he was pronounced dead at around 7.30am. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Idris.
"As with all deaths there will be an investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman," he added.
His death came less than one month after 15-year-old Liam McManus was found hanging in his cell at Lancaster Farms Young Offender Institution in Lancashire (CYP Now, 5-11 December 2007).
