The programme targets children who, as a result of witnessing or experiencing physical or sexual abuse, domestic violence or neglect, find it difficult to form relationships. These children can become disruptive and are at risk of developing mental health problems. The project will train teachers and teaching assistants in attachment theory to help them give the support they need to form attachments.
Conservative councillor Vanessa Brown, Brighton's lead member for children's services, said using the theory, which is well-known to social workers, was an exciting step forward. "We believe this training will help these children to be more receptive to learning and thus prevent exclusion or increased mental health difficulties."
