Talking Point: How do young people feel about National Citizen Service?

1 min read Youth Work
With the National Citizen Service pilots set to begin next year, start a discussion about how young people feel about giving up their summer and what they could gain from it.

Last month the government announced that pilots of its National Citizen Service (NCS) would begin in summer 2011. The pilot scheme hopes to involve around 10,000 school leavers aged 16 and will last for seven to eight weeks after the summer exam period. As part of the scheme, young people will be expected to take part in an outdoor challenge, some structured tasks centred around the local community and a social action task.

Will the NCS scheme have a positive effect on young people? What will they learn from it? What new skills will they develop? How could they use the skills once the scheme has ended? Might these skills help them get a job? What other opportunities could taking part in the scheme open up for young people? How could young people use these skills to benefit their communities? Young people participating in the scheme will need to give up their summer holiday. Should they get paid for taking part?
