The festive season is over and any warm fuzzy feelings could soon be replaced with the worry of having over-indulged and overspent. Young people could find themselves out of pocket and might find it hard to make ends meet in January. An important point to get across is that young people shouldn't feel pressurised to spend money or embarrassed if they can't afford things. It's a difficult time for everyone. Discuss how other people may be affected by over-spending, such as the elderly or lone parents. What advice would young people give to someone who was struggling financially?
Just because it's January it doesn't mean young people can't enjoy themselves. Ask the group to consider ways they can do this without spending money. There are many free or cheap activities available for young people, who can take advantage of concessions and student discounts. The January sales are a great time to buy things at discounted prices, and it should be possible to save money on essential items. Money-off store vouchers, marked-down products and "buy-one, get-one-free" offers can also make funds go further.
