Talking Point: Do many young people regularly experience depression?

Around a quarter of young people suffer from depression. Start a discussion about how to recognise symptoms of mental health problems and how young people can find help.

According to teenage pregnancy charity Straight Talking, young mums are three times more likely to experience postnatal depression. Around 25 per cent of young people suffer from depression by the age of 24, but not many seek help. Start a discussion about depression and how it can affect young people.

Depression can occur in women even before their baby is born. Many young mums feel overwhelmed and lonely when they fall pregnant. Once their baby is born they may have confusing feelings about being a mum. They may not immediately feel a maternal bond and could feel resentful towards the baby. Talk about how having a baby is life changing, and how both young mums and dads may need some help to adjust.
