Swipe card raises free meal uptake

Youth Work
The introduction of a youth entitlement card in Barking has led to an increase in the uptake of free school meals.

Eastbury School, which is piloting the scheme, has seen an 11 per cent rise in the number of pupils accessing free school meals since the Street Base Connect card was introduced in March.

Street Base Connect gives young people a swipe card they can use to pay for youth, health, leisure and library services along with cashless catering.

Kevin Taggart, project manager for Street Base Connect, said: "The pilot has proven to be a great success with 1,700 young people using the card to access catering and leisure services and earning reward points in the process."

In 2007, the then Labour government scrapped a national youth entitlement card after strong opposition from the youth sector over the costs involved.
