Sure Start: Pilot offers women lessons in DIY skills

Women from a Sure Start group in Sunderland have been learning DIY skills through a pilot programme launched by a local housing group.

Sunderland Housing Group is running a 10-week programme that providesbasic training in health and safety, painting and decorating, joinery,basic bricklaying and other DIY skills to women from Sure StartPallion.

Carla Mileham, social investment co-ordinator for Sunderland HousingGroup, said: "From learning how to hang paintings to getting to gripswith changing a plug, this project is enabling women to maintain theirown properties."

At present 10 women are enrolled on the course, many of whom rentproperties through Sunderland Housing Group. They attend classes whiletheir children are at nursery. "It is a condition of our tenancyagreement that they maintain their homes, but many of them don't havethe skills. It's good to be able to give them those skills," saidMileham. "One lady likes it so much she's applied for an apprenticeconstruction course."
