The rollout of Sure Start-style services is integral to the Government's vision of integrated children's services within children's centres. But a study of seven mainstreaming pilots has found that much relies on the personal commitment and drive of individuals working in children and family services.
The assessment, carried out by economic development consultants SWQ, may serve to dampen down fears that mainstreaming would be a logistical nightmare.
It found most projects were expected to have a long-term positive impact on service delivery. One example was integrated midwifery services developed in north Manchester by Sure Start and the health service. This approach led to a better use of time and resources and is soon to be expanded to the whole area.
