Supporting Disabled Parents: A Family or a Fragmented Approach?

2 mins read Social Care
A social care watchdog has published a report highlighting the inadequate support disabled parents receive from local authorities.

Who has published the report? The research was carried out by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI). The commission wanted to find out about the experiences of disabled parents and their children, and to see if councils provided sufficient support. A total of 50 councils were surveyed.

What were the findings? The report, Supporting Disabled Parents: A Family or a Fragmented Approach?, concluded that disabled parents and their children often receive inadequate support from councils due to the separation of children's and adults' services. The CSCI said there was a danger that disabled parents and their children could "fall through the gap in services" because there was "competition between departments as to who owns the issues of the family". Only 17 per cent of councils in the survey "collected any information" about disabled parents and their families. Consequently, councils are planning and commissioning services despite having little knowledge about the service users.
