Support service for black teachers

1 min read Careers Education
A network offering guidance, support and careers advice to black teachers in London is to be launched later this week.

The network aims to tackle prejudice suffered by black teachers and address concerns about career development. Labour MP Diane Abbott will launch the network at the London Schools and the Black Child conference this Saturday (8 December).

A report last year from the Mayor of London found a lack of promotions and general career development were among the chief reasons for black teachers leaving the profession.

Tony Talburt, education and curriculum adviser at the National Black Boys Can Association, welcomed the launch but said it was essential that the network had good processes in place for feeding back information.

"Its activities must not be done in secret; there needs to be good links to general teaching bodies," he said. The network could help raise the achievement of black children by allowing staff to come together and share ideas, Talburt added.
