Substance misuse: Kent young people support drug tests

Young people from Kent have dismissed concerns of drug charities and civil liberties organisations about a local school's plan to test pupils for drugs.

Local UK Youth Parliament member Steven Ferguson, 17, said: "It is a good idea, but needs to be done in the right way."

Zana Owen, 16, from Kent Youth Council, met the headmaster of Abbey School in Faversham, which is conducting the tests. She said her main concern was that pupils might test positive if their drinks are spiked.

A spokeswoman for Drug-Scope said the tests could have a negative impact.

She added that US evidence shows testing does not reduce drug use.
